Welcome to the Northeast Seattle Wire!

So many new subscribers this past week - thank you for joining! I started this newsletter because after years of living in Wedgwood, I was still missing events, key dates, and neighborhood news simply because there was no single place to find it all. This is my attempt to change that - one week at a time. And a special welcome to my Maple Leaf and Lake City readers - glad you're here!

The Northeast Seattle Wire is your weekly digest of what's happening in our neighborhoods - the events, openings, and neighborhood news worth knowing about. I cover what I can find, and I'd love your help. If you know about something that belongs in here, reply to this email and tell me. That's how this gets better.

The beginning of each issue will have select updates and news from around the neighborhood. The newsletter will always end with key dates & websites for reference so you can find them every time.

Know someone who would enjoy this newsletter? Please help Northeast Seattle Wire grow by forwarding this email!

📅 This Week’s News Highlight

Trader Joe’s is coming to Northgate!

Trader Joe’s is coming to Northgate! Big news for fellow Trader Joe's fans. The new location is coming to 401 NE Northgate Way - no opening date yet, but it's confirmed. Easier to get to than the U-District store with the potential of better parking. Small silver lining given that the former QFC on 35th has been empty for five years and Wedgwood Center is still on hold — but we'll take it! Here’s the King 5 News story.

⛸️ Beyond Northeast Seattle

The U.S. Women's National Team takes on Japan at Lumen Field on Tuesday April 14, and it's a great excuse for a midweek outing. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster.

If you ask me, live women's soccer in Seattle is one of the best deals in sports right now - world-class athletes, an electric crowd, and a stadium that actually fills up for it. Our family be there!

If you’re looking for a different sports event, look at the bottom of this email for links to individual schedules. I also created an overview of all the events until the 20th at the bottom of my staycation post.

🔍 Karen's Local Pick

Santo Coffee Co in Ravenna

If you haven't made it to Santo Coffee yet, spring break week is a good excuse. Located at 1325 NE 65th St in Roosevelt — right on the edge of our neighborhood — it's a vibey and beautiful coffee shop with baristas who clearly take the craft seriously. Oh, and it was co-founded by former Seattle Sounders star Fredy Montero and his wife Alexis, which is a fun detail (if you’re a Sounders fan).

🗺  Reminder: One Seattle Zoning & City Policy

The biggest policy story affecting all three neighborhoods this spring is Seattle's One Seattle Comprehensive Plan and the Centers & Corridors zoning legislation.

What it is: The legislation updates zoning across 30 new Neighborhood Centers, expanded Urban Centers, and transit corridors city-wide — affecting the built character of NE Seattle.

Why it matters: Parts of Wedgwood and Ravenna may see new multi-family housing capacity. Phase 2 in 2026 addresses Frequent Transit Route zones, which includes stretches of 35th Ave NE and NE 65th St.

Key upcoming dates: April 6 public hearing & rally (yesterday) • May 29 second public hearing

Get involved: Sign up for Futurewise's free volunteer training at futurewise.org or follow your neighborhood council for updates.
