Happy Tuesday! Thanks to all the folks who have reached out in the past few weeks - I appreciate all the suggestions and various events you’ve all shared. Please keep it coming! There’s a lot more going on in Northeast Seattle than I thought! Some fun things I discovered in the last week:
There’s a NE Seattle based zine called "hey, neighbor!" that features writing and art from NE Seattle residents - it already has 3 issues and the 4th one is in the works (in fact, they are taking submissions until May 31st for the next issue - submit here)
Have you heard of Betty Ball? I hadn’t, but Betty Ball is unskilled and very quirky version of pick up basketball for adults. Specifically, adults 50+. It’s played on a half court with no rules or scorekeeping. The Ravenna Eckstein Center offers Betty Ball on Fridays at 1-2:30pm until June 12. Let chaos ensue!
How did I learn about Betty Ball? I learned about it while visiting Ravenna Refills. Ravenna Refills is a zero-waste refill shop at 65th and 16th Ave NE — bring your own containers and fill up on everyday staples like shampoo, laundry powder, and soap. It's the kind of place you pop into for dish soap and leave genuinely excited about what else you can refill!
Also discovered PopRox Dance Studio - a U District dance studio (with a second location on Capitol Hill) offering classes in K-Pop, contemporary, Bollywood, and more for adults, kids, and teens. No experience required. They also rent their studios for private events - speaking of birthdays, I put together a recap of kid birthday party venues we've actually visited if you're in search of one!

📅 Upcoming Notable Events
🚣 Windermere Cup — Saturday, May 2, Montlake Cut. Started in 1987, the Windermere Cup is one of Seattle's great spring traditions - UW Rowing vs. elite international crews (this year: Great Britain, Canada, and Northeastern University), followed by the Opening Day Boat Parade. Free to watch. Best spots are the north and south shores of the Montlake Cut, or the Montlake Bridge (open to pedestrians 9:40am–noon). Races start at 10:15am. Heads up: the Montlake Cut closes to car traffic 9:30am–4:00pm and the area gets congested early — take Metro or ride your bike if you can. → windermerecup.com
Local connection update!: reader Kristin let me know that her husband Hans Struzyna — a Team USA Olympian, UW alum, and NE Seattle neighbor — is racing in the very first race at 10:15am. If you're headed down, you'll be cheering on one of our own. Follow along on his Instagram. → windermerecup.com

Your neighbor Julie is a Wedgwood-based photographer who specializes in families, newborns, high school seniors, and headshots (she’s done mine!) — and she has Mother's Day mini sessions available to book now. Whether it's a gift for your mom, a gift for yourself, or a bribe to get 20 minutes of kid cooperation, it counts. → thehiddenlens.com
⛸️ Beyond Northeast Seattle

Stoup Brewing’s wonderful patio on a summer day
🍺 Worth the Trip: Stoup Brewing Kenmore
We ended up at Stoup Kenmore last weekend after a bike ride and some fishing, and it was exactly the right call. Family-friendly taproom with a food menu focused on local, sustainably sourced ingredients - dogs welcome on the patio, which never hurts. The kind of place that earns a regular spot in the rotation for a low-key afternoon out. (And we love their nachos!)
6704 NE 181st St, Kenmore — Fri–Sat noon–9pm, Sun noon–8pm, Tue–Thu 4–9pm. → stoupbrewing.com
🔍 Karen's Local Pick

Spring Drop Gnocchi from La Pasta we picked up last week
🔍 Karen's Local Pick: La Pasta
I first discovered La Pasta at a farmers market over a decade ago - turns out that's exactly how they started, with just two market booths back in 2002. They have a storefront right here in Wedgwood, tucked into what was originally the butcher shop side of the historic Morningside Market building. Fresh pasta made locally - the ravioli is the move, but the rigatoni is just as good. Pick some up and dinner is basically done.
9118 35th Ave NE — Mon–Fri 11am–6:30pm, Sat–Sun 11am–6pm.

🌮 Tacos WA (8515 35th Ave NE) 🟢 New! This one opened right under my nose - a new Mexican spot on 35th serving carne asada, birria, burritos, and breakfast. Already earning five-star reviews from neighbors. Open daily 7:30am–10pm. → tacoswa.com
