The Public House Is Out. 85th Socials Is In. Happy Tuesday.

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone is enjoying the last bits of summer (supposed to be a hot one today!) before we descend into fall. Thanks to everyone who responded about my Northeast Seattle restaurant take-out guide! I learned there are loads of new places to try, especially teriyaki spots. Here’s what else is happening in our ‘hood:

🍻 Wedgwood Public House closed its doors on Aug 15. Per the Wedgwood Community Council, building owner Sanjay Sharma had poured energy & dollars (despite some controversy surrounding the previous beloved tenants - the old Wedgwood Ale House) into remodeling that space before his unexpected passing mid-project, leaving his son Sahil to see it through and open both Wedgwood Public and two ghost kitchens in back. Now, a new tenant has already lined up: 85th Socials by NOLA is moving into 8515 35th Ave NE, the same spot that's hosted the Wedgwood Ale House and, most recently, the Public House. 🎪 Also worth flagging early: Bumbershoot is back at Seattle Center for Labor Day weekend (Sept 5–6), and this year's lineup has some real names on it. Death Cab for Cutie headlines Sunday, fresh off a new album — Turnstile leads Saturday. You'll also find Japanese Breakfast, De La Soul, Bikini Kill, Blood Orange, and Orville Peck across the two days. ⚾ Did you catch the Mariners Saturday night? Randy Arozarena had, by his own admission, the best game of his career: a leadoff homer, a home run robbery in the third, and then a two-run walk-off in the ninth to beat the Cubs 5-4 at T-Mobile Park. Kade Anderson also made his MLB debut the same night. If you missed it, the walk-off is worth 30 seconds of your time. → Watch the walk-off

🏈 Apple Cup — Washington Huskies vs. Washington State — Sun, Sept 6, 1pm (NBC) — Husky Stadium

UW opens its 2026 season at home against Washington State in the 118th Apple Cup. Not this week, but close enough that it's worth planning around if you're headed near campus that Sunday — expect stadium traffic and a packed light rail. → Full 2026 Husky football schedule

🧗 Half Moon Bouldering — Free Open House for Beginners (Ages 5+) — Wed, Aug 26, 4–6pm (flexible check-in, latest by 5:30) — 124 N 85th St, Seattle

It's a bit outside our usual footprint (Greenwood), but if you've got a kid curious about climbing, this is a no-pressure way to try it — no experience needed, instructors on hand, and a peek at fall class discounts if you sign up after. → Book your spot

🏊 Dual Aqua Run — Meadowbrook Pool — Sun, Aug 31 — 10515 35th Ave NE

An inflatable obstacle course meets pool day: $8/swimmer ($2 for existing scholarship recipients), ages 6+. Pre-registration required, and a deep-water swim test is required for all youth attending. Four time slots — 1:45pm, 3pm, 4:15pm, and 5:30pm — and registration tends to fill fast. → Register on ActiveNet (search the activity number for your time slot)

✂️ Hugo's Barbershop — $10 back-to-school cuts for students, Aug 29–30, 1–6pm, first come first served (8011 Lake City Way NE).

💆 Body Collective Massage Studio — 2nd Anniversary Open House — Sat, Sept 12, 3–7pm — 3240 NE 45th St (Bryant/Laurelhurst)

Ann opened Body Collective two years ago as a women-owned therapeutic massage and bodywork studio, and she's marking the anniversary with an open house: complimentary 15-minute chair massages, studio tours, a raffle for a free 60-minute massage, a chance to meet the therapists, and light refreshments. She'll also be sharing some special treatment deals for the month at the event. A couple weeks out, but worth putting on the calendar now. → Visit Body Collective

Ongoing and most certainly nothing new: Revive I-5. (bleh) Northbound I-5 remains down to two lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge — worth knowing if you're headed south, and it's expected to stay this way through the end of 2026. I keep hoping it will be sooner!

Looking ahead: UW opens its football season at home against Washington State in the Apple Cup on Sunday, Sept 6 at 1pm (NBC) — the same weekend as PAX West and Bumbershoot downtown. It's a busy stretch to be anywhere near Husky Stadium or Seattle Center.

📍 8050 35th Ave NE (Wedgwood)

I stumbled onto this one while looking for yoga classes nearby, and ended up trying a sound bath on a whim. Founded by Roger Tjoelker, a professional gong player and Transformational Breath® facilitator, blosm is part yoga studio, part sound-healing sanctuary — Kundalini and Viniyoga classes alongside Gong Sound Immersions, breathwork, and community gatherings. It's easy to drive right past on 35th without knowing what's happening inside (just past The Broiler). I'm not a sound bath person by nature, but it was a genuinely relaxing hour, and I'd go back to try it again! → See their calendar

🎉 85th Socials by NOLA | Coming soon to 8515 35th Ave NE, the space Wedgwood Public House left behind Aug 15 (see intro for the fuller story). The concept comes from the team behind NOLA's Bengali/North Indian takeout kitchen down the block, promising a full kitchen-bar-community space — "where Kolkata's soul meets Wedgwood's heart." No opening date yet.
